John Williams is the fire ecologist for The Nature Conservancy in California where he works with other scientists, natural resource managers, tribes and partner agencies to improve the health and resiliency of fire-adapted forests and the people who depend on them. He also conducts applied research on the effects of wildfire, prescribed fire, fire history, and climate on California forests.

Prior to joining TNC, John worked as a project scientist at UC Davis, overseeing prescribed fire monitoring programs across California, and as a professor of conservation ecology at the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico. He received his PhD in ecology from UC Davis and has master’s degrees in environmental management and public policy from Duke University.
